Have Japanese drivers underperformed when compared with their team-mates? That is a truer measure of driving ability, and that is one metric which we are here to find out.
Success in real terms is measured by actual points gained. But there is more to it than that.
Would, for example, any Japanese driver have compared favourably with Ayrton Senna or Alain Prost when driving a McLaren-Honda from the late 1980s? Unlikely, you may think.
However, would that same driver, in a 1989 McLaren-Honda, have been able to beat Ayrton Senna driving a Zakspeed-Yamaha or a Larrousse-Lamborghini (as then driven by Aguri Suzuki)? You would tend to assume that they would.
Statistics can be twisted in many ways to prove a point, but in this book I have used a newly-developed and unique algorithm which eradicates many of the imbalances which are inherent when different drivers are driving different cars, for different teams, against different team-mates, against different contemporary drivers.
After all, each season’s drivers are not necessarily of equal standard when compared with other seasons. Think of the void left in 1994 when not just one, but two of the world’s best-ever Formula 1 drivers were no longer competing.
